THE PENCER HOUSE
LOWER EAST SIDE, NY

for the Lower Eastside Service Center

The Pencer House is a 5-story supportive housing development located in the Lower East Side.

The original wood-joist precedent facilitated public service, at points hosting a library and a kindergarten.

The 6-floor concrete addition followed the intention to convert the space into a supportive housing facility for single persons.

The red masonry and teal framing of the original extends to the addition, tying the facility's current purpose to the character of the original.

The building provides 40 studio apartments for applicants referred by New York City’s HRA/HASA.

The facility offers on-site case management staff and clinical services. Amenities include a community lounge, rear yard community space, and dining room.

EQ Architecture is currently administrating the rehabilitation of this historic community site. Rehabilitation is scheduled for completion in the Fall of 2024.
